More Smash Notes From Sakurai

In a recent interview with Nintendo DREAM magazine, Masahiro Sakurai notes that ARMS and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 had unfortunate timing, with all the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate characters already decided at the start of the project plan, thus it wasn’t possible to add more in the middle of development.

Simon and Richter Belmont’s design inspiration came from Castlevania: Harmony of Despair, as well as the original Famicom/NES games.

Sakurai consulted with the Splatoon team regarding how to implement the ink in Smash. He also consulted with the Splatoon team regarding the alts.

Isabelle wasn’t only chosen for the ‘casual’ Animal Crossing audience but like Villager, is a technical fighter and enjoyed by many hardcore Smash players.

Ridley was difficult to implement because of his size, so Sakurai decided to have his arms and legs bend like in Metroid and Super Metroid to give an impression of size.

Sakurai finishes by saying that Piranha Plant was chosen due to his uniqueness, and that he is a very well known character from the Super Mario series.
